Caring For Your Border Terrier
When getting a new dog especially a puppy be sure to take them to the
vet’s as soon as possible for vaccinations. Be sure to follow up with
the booster shots also as well as shots for flea and tick control. While
you at the vet’s take the time to talk about the various diseases and
conditions that Border Terriers are prone to. Some of
the conditions
that Border Terrier’s can develop are heart murmurs, hypothyroidism,
patellar luxation, Legg-Perthes, seizures, and Spike’s Disease.
Keep
in mind that Border Terriers get bored very easily. So when you start
the training process with your puppy remember that they get distracted
very easily. Use a lot of treats when training this dog they have been
proven to work very well. These terriers learn very quickly but you need
to have a lot of patience and a great sense of humor. When Border
Terriers are puppies you should get them adjusted to being around
children. If you don’t have children hopefully you know a family that
does. These dogs are wonderful playmates and adapt to any lifestyle. If
you don’t introduce them to children when they are young they could
become easily intimidated. Border Terriers can also become scared of
loud noises, which could make them chronic barkers. Try to get your dog
adjusted to noises early in their lives. If your plans are to keep
your Border Terrier outside a lot make sure you have either a fenced in
area or your yard is fenced in. Remember these terriers love to dig a
lot so make your fence stronger by adding either a hedge or concrete.
